HomewardBound is the only year-round homeless shelter within a 240-mile radius of Grand Junction that accommodates families, children, single men and women, people with disabilities and military veterans. In addition to the above services, we also provide vocational training, day shelter, and access to free items like blankets, clothing and toiletries!
The Grand Junction Community Homeless Shelter was formed in 1998 by a coalition including St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, The Grand Junction Housing Authority, The Salvation Army and Grand Valley Catholic Outreach in response to a critical need for winter night shelter for the homeless in our community.
Today there are 23 additional organizations in that coalition as we continue to match the services and needs of our most vulnerable citizens. We currently house 90+ people per night, run three successful transitional programs, collaborate with local area churches to address our emergency shelter issues during the winter and provided over 39,000 bed nights during our 2010 fiscal year.
Concerned citizens brought this organization together, our community made it the compassionate shelter it is known to be and continued collaboration is taking us to a success-filled future.
In keeping with many other communities throughout the U.S., a committee of the Grand Valley Coalition for the Homeless has crafted a “Ten Year Plan” to “End Homelessness” in the Grand Valley. The GVCH is comprised of organizations and individuals who work together to address the issue of homelessness in the Grand Valley through education, cooperation, and joint projects.
