Food Bank for the Heartland distributes emergency and supplemental food to families in need in Nebraska and western Iowa. The Food Bank partners with 600 other non-profit organizations such as emergency shelters, meal providers, after-school programs and schools. The Food Bank receives donated food from retailers, manufacturers and wholesalers. However, the Food Bank also purchases food, with an emphasis on food with high nutritional value, in order to meet the need for assistance. For every donated $1, the Food Bank can distribute enough food for thee meals. According to the best data available, approximately 220,000 people in the Food Bank’s service area struggle with hunger, 87,000 are children under the age of 18. During FY 2018, we distributed 25 million meals to our nonprofit partners that have touched the lives of people in the community.
