The Emergency Shelter Management Services, Inc. (previously known as Immanuel Baptist Shelter) was established in 1989 and became a nonprofit corporation in 1992. In the late 1980s, the City of New Haven’s homeless population seemed to be escalating with few adequate services available. Observing the need and feeling committed to service, the Immanuel Baptist Church used its platform as a soup kitchen to expand its efforts. The 75-bed shelter, later moved from the church site to Grand Avenue, was born. Emergency Shelter Management Services, Inc. (ESMS) is a tax-exempt non-profit organization under section 501c3 of the Internal Revenue code.

First and foremost, we provide New Haven’s men who are experiencing homelessness with dinner and a place to sleep.

For those who want it, we also provide resource guidance, case management, and training from community volunteers. We want to empower people who want resources to transition out of homelessness with what they need.
