Important Update: Due to COVID-19, we have suspended services in our Food Pantry and Clothing Closet. We look forward to reopening both operations as soon as possible and hope to expand to serve a wider range of clients to address economic hardship caused by the pandemic. Urban Ministries of Durham operates the Food Pantry and Clothing Closet to address basic emergency needs for food, clothing, diapers and hygiene supplies. Most of those receiving support are not homeless but are trying to stretch very limited resources. Volunteers assisting guests watch for signs that a family is in danger of becoming homeless and can provide referrals to case managers and financial assistance providers for additional support.

For Fiscal Year 2018-2019, our Food Pantry distributed 141,689 pounds of food, and our Clothing Closet gave out 39,299 articles of clothing. These operations served an average of 503 households per month last fiscal year. 

Those served shop for what they need in a simulated retail setting, affording choice and better recognizing their dignity as individuals. Guests may receive groceries and/or clothing and/or hygiene items and/or diapers once every 30 days provided that they meet eligibility requirements (see below) and provide documentation.

The Food Pantry and Clothing Closet is open:

Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1-3 pm

Tuesday and Thursday from 9-11 am and 5-6:30 pm

Services are available to the first 20 households and 5 shelter clients during each time slot. We recommend arriving 10-15 minutes before the doors open to get in line.This program could not exist without the strong and dedicated support of groups of volunteers from local communities of faith, schools and businesses
